9 marketplace startups to watch. What do they have in common?

  • Outdated and slow systems are hindering buying and selling across various industries, but startups are recognizing the opportunity.

  • The question remains: which startups will be the next ones to shine? VCs from White Star Capital, Fuel Ventures, and OMERS Ventures spotlighted for Sifted marketplaces not in their portfolios (otherwise, I would expect Nicolas to mention Packhelp) that have caught their attention

    • Nicholas Stocks, general partner at White Star Capital

      • Ovoko (Lithuania): Ovoko's RRR is a used car marketplace operating across Europe, optimizing inventory, search, and logistics. Suppliers manage inventory and unlock new demand through the marketplace

      • MerXu (Poland): MerXu is a B2B industrial goods marketplace, offering transparency and trust with verified sellers

    • Alexander Breeden, senior associate at Fuel Ventures

      • Breedr (UK): Breedr's livestock platform facilitates farmer-to-farmer livestock trading. The mobile app aids livestock management with features like a virtual medicine cabinet and breeding monitoring.

      • Rooser (UK): Rooser connects seafood buyers and suppliers, enabling efficient trading, negotiation, and real-time orders across Europe. The platform minimizes fish waste due to market volatility

      • Timberhub (Netherlands): Marketplace streamlines international timber trading, connecting buyers and suppliers. An algorithm links construction companies to suitable suppliers, speeding up material sourcing

      • Vanilla Steel (Germany): Vanilla Steel offers direct sourcing of excess and prime metals from European suppliers. It eliminates lengthy negotiations and provides access to aged inventory, declassified materials, and semi-finished products

      • Metaloop (Austria): Metaloop is an all-in-one scrap metal marketplace, connecting sellers with buyers. With 400+ partners, it streamlines the process for scrap dealers, recyclers, and carriers

    • Namat Bahram, an associate at OMERS Ventures

      • Vosbor (Netherlands): Vosbor transforms food trading into a marketplace for commodities like grain and oilseed. Enhancing transparency and accessibility, it addresses climate risks and global conflict challenges

      • Container xChange (Germany): Container xChange's online platform revolutionizes container logistics. Buyers, sellers, and leasers access over 1,500 sources, and real-time data tools reduce manual workloads for industry professionals

๐Ÿ““Comments:

Among all the startups listed by leading investors all operate in B2B space. Why B2B now?
๐ŸŽฏ Profitable niche markets with focused value propositions
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Streamlining complex processes, reducing inefficiencies and improving operations
๐Ÿ“Š Scalability and network effects with exponential growth opportunities
๐Ÿ’ต Higher transaction volume and value compared to B2C markets

Who's shopping the most at AliExpress? Why?

  • In 2010, Alibaba Group launched AliExpress, a global marketplace for Chinese retailers. Initially criticized for its low-cost items, AliExpress has established itself in Europe and Latin America. AliExpress serves as a platform solely dedicated to third-party sellers

    • ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spain is a priority for AliExpress in Europe. Cainiao (the logistics arm for Alibaba) recently announced the launch of weekend delivery and same-city delivery services in Spain's major cities to optimize local logistics experiences. AliExpress Plaza, the brand's first physical store, opened in Madrid's Xanadรบ mall in 2019

    • ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ In the Netherlands, AliExpress is the third most popular e-commerce platform, with 28% usage. A major advantage for Dutch online shoppers is that the partnership between AliExpress and PostNL means orders can be delivered much faster. Normally, consumers have to wait for weeks until orders from China arrive at their homes, now orders can arrive within 5 to 7 business days

    • ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท Brazil and ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ Mexico are significant markets for Aliexpress, as they are also the largest e-markets in Latam. In both, Aliexpress has operated for nearly a decade and offers โ€œlocal-to-localโ€ sales (local sellers on top of Chinese). Aliexpress has been pushing to onboard new Brazilian sellers with zero commission and cashback for 3 months

๐Ÿ““Comments:

Key factors driving Aliexpress share across countries seems to be:

๐Ÿšš Quick Delivery: Countries with relatively fast delivery (like Spain and Netherlands) utilize Aliexpress the most. This could be the reason why Cainiao wants to offer 5-Day Delivery Service Globally (at this stage this seems to be still in works and it is only guaranteed in Korea)
๐Ÿค AliExpress Choice: product section that in the majority of regions is eligible for free shipping for a single item or any three selected items. 15+ countries (incl. Spain and France) enjoy free returns and nearly 20 countries (incl. Germany and Switzerland) are offered delivery guarantee.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŒพ Local sellers offering local products: Local sellers have a better understanding of local users, their products have better designs as they are closer to local users. This model has launched in 2010. Beyond mentioned Brasil and Mexico it was available in Spain and Italy
