1. ๐Ÿ“ฐ News of the week

Amazon Ads with a #1 power rating. How massive can it become?

  • ๐Ÿš€ Just Released: Insider Intelligence's "Power of Amazon Report for 2023" offers a comprehensive view of Amazon's business landscape, highlighting both its strengths and challenges across various divisions.

  • ๐Ÿ›’ Over the past two years, Amazon has continued to strengthen its position as a dominant force in retail and technology. However, it hasn't been immune to economic uncertainties, shifting consumer behaviors, and intensified competition.

  • ๐Ÿ“ˆ In 2023, Amazon's advertising division claimed the top spot, followed by Retail e-commerce and Fulfillment. While the retail division remains the revenue leader, it has experienced a market share decrease since the previous report in 2021. Amazon faced significant hurdles in 2022, including macroeconomic challenges and fierce competition from Walmart.

โ

Despite 2022 being one of the harder macroeconomic years in recent memory, and with some of our own operating challenges to boot, we still found a way to grow demand

Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO,
  • As per the report, the primary beneficiaries can be summarized as follows:

    • Fire TV: Expanded product line with more affordable and enhanced models, while original Amazon devices maintain their role as strong media platforms.

    • Video: Amazon's significant investments in original content have led to robust economic performance in this sector.

    • Ring Home Security: Amazon prioritizes security cameras within its IoT strategy under the Ring Home Security division.

    • Amazon One: Continues to lead the emerging biometric payments market.

  • Conversely, some of the notable setbacks include:

    • Grocery: Amazon remains competitive in the digital market, but its growth in the grocery sector has been gradual.

    • Stores: Amazon temporarily paused the introduction of new store formats, opting for an experimental and learning-focused approach.

    • Gaming: Amazon requires further efforts to establish a leading position in the gaming industry.

    • Just Walk Out: Store closures and cost-cutting measures have posed challenges to the progress of this technology.

โ

"I think Amazon advertising is going to be massive (โ€ฆ) Itโ€™s part of a marketplace, where advertising is the targeting. Marketers donโ€™t care about clicks anymore (โ€ฆ) Clicks are dead itโ€™s all about sales.'"

Brian Mandelbaum, CEO of Attain

๐Ÿ““Comments:

There's no doubt this advertising business is an unbelievable profit generator with exceptional margins. With its current trajectory, the ad business could even stand toe-to-toe with Amazon's cloud business

Germany's Big4 Marketplaces: Best prices guaranteed?

When it comes to online shopping in Germany, Amazon, eBay, Otto, and Kaufland are household names. Many assume these giants offer the best prices. But do they?

  • ๐Ÿ” Idealโ€‹o, the leading price comparison platform, conducted an extensive analysis across 1,700+ product categories to uncover the truth.

  • ๐Ÿ“Š The findings might surprise you! In four out of five cases, large marketplaces were found to be more expensive than other online retailers.

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ Good news for savvy shoppers: Smaller marketplaces often deliver the best prices. This means you can save money by exploring alternative options.

  • ๐Ÿ›’ The largest price disparities were discovered in the drugstore & health and home & garden categories. Likely, this is due to a few major players dominating these sectors, giving them more influence with suppliers.

  • ๐Ÿค‘ The price difference between major marketplaces and other shops averaged just 1%. However, when we look at specific categories, interesting trends emerge. For instance, electrical items tend to be 7% cheaper on major marketplaces compared to other retailers. In contrast, consumers in the drugstore sector could enjoy an average savings of 13% by choosing alternatives to Amazon, Ebay, Otto, or Kaufland
